We’ve never been in Big Bear with the kids so this year marked our first time!

I wanted to tell you all about our trip, what to do, where to go and any other details so you can have a little guide to Big Bear in case you want to go one day as well.

Big Bear is one of the close-by mountain towns that get snow here in Southern Calfornia and it’s easy to go even for a weekend getaway.

Below you’ll find what we did each day of our winter family vacation, you can use this as a mini guide to Big Bear!

DAY 1 – GETTING THERE, SNOW PLAY AND EQUIPMENT

Our trip started on a Wednesday right after New Year’s so the kids didn’t miss school. It was a pretty easy drive up the hills! I highly recommend you LEAVE MID-WEEK if you can. It will be more of a pleasant drive. From San Diego, it takes about three and a half hours but if you leave on a Friday afternoon and come back Sunday you will end up driving through tons of traffic on the curvy mountain road.

We stopped at one of the little shops entering the town to get some snow gloves, they make a difference, and they are not so easy to find in San Diego. If you need winter gear, those shops offer generic brands at good prices. 

A good cabin just sets the mood for your cozy winter vacation. The Big Bear Airbnb cabin we rented was lovely and very cozy. 2 rooms with plenty of beds. About 10 minutes from Snow Summit Resort if you’re interested in going. Even though it was peak season we were able to get a good price.

The kids immediately went outdoors and started playing with the snow, it was actually the first time they could hang out and play with the snow for long so imagine the excitement!

After settling in, we wanted to go explore town and get some groceries, we thought we could easily shop for any essentials in Big Bear, but the grocery shop was so crowded and it didn’t have enough water bottles or hot chocolate for example!! The lines were huge, I think it’s best to bring all our supplies from home next time just in case! TIP: Bring as many groceries as you can.

Then we found Gaby’s Latin Flavors restaurant for dinner which was good, not a wowing place, but ok for a small family. For equipment rental, we went to Goldsmith and if you log in on Yelp or on their site, you can get great coupons. It’s much easier to get your equipment the night before.

DAY 2 – SNOWBOARDING, DINING, SHOPPING AND A PARK

When you think of a winter vacation you think skying or snowboarding right? Well, half of us like that and half of us don’t. So we divide and conquer!

We had breakfast at the cabin and then dropped off Derek and Adrian to snowboard at Snow Summit. Traffic get complicated, so plan to spend some time in the car!

I would recommend setting a time to reconvene instead of trying to call or send messages because the connection at the resort is bad.

Eating at the resort during peak season gets complicated as well… long lines and high-priced meals. Get some food and deliver it to your family! Maya and I met Derek and Adrian at the parking lot drop-off area with some burgers and then went back to our own activities.

Meanwhile, they were at the resort we built a snowman, we went window shopping at Big Bear Village, we had yummy lunch at The Bone Yard and we went to Meadow park (I searched for a park with a playground for Mayita). I loved the one-on-one time I spent with her!

That night we wanted to do some take-out for dinner and the town was so full that pizzerias weren’t taking orders!! We did find a nice Mexican place, Nuevo Vallarta Grill and they made our food for pick up.

DAY 3 – COFFEE AND SLEDDING ON THE WAY OUT

Last day and we had to check out our cabin, we had breakfast and went to a coffee shop close by that was very local, I love to see local places like this one: Moonridge Coffee Company, super nice and they have cool furniture!

We still wanted to go sledding but didn’t really have the time or the money to spend all day in specialty park. Driving down the mountain there is Snow Valley resort, I think the best decision was to park in their parking lot ($10 all day and you have to be there early to get a spot!) then walk (carefully!) uphill a little bit and sled right there by the highway.

And after a couple of hours and lots of pictures later we left, we had so much fun during our vacation, we stopped and had late lunch during our way home.

GUÍA DE 3 DÍAS PARA IR A BIG BEAR LAKE: VACACIONES DE INVIERNO

Nunca habíamos ido a Big Bear con los niños, ¡así que este año marcó nuestra primera vez!

Quería contarles todo sobre nuestro viaje, qué hacer allá, a qué lugares ir y cualquier otro detallito para que puedan tener una pequeña guía de Big Bear en caso de que también quieran ir algún día.

Big Bear es uno de los pueblos de montaña cercanos donde hay nieve en invierno aquí en el sur de Calfornia y es fácil ir porque está cerquita, incluso para un de fin de semana.

Aquí abajo, les cuento lo que hicimos cada uno de los 3 días de nuestras vacaciones de invierno en familia, ¡lo pueden usar como una mini guía de Big Bear!

DÍA 1 – LLEGANDO, JUEGOS EN LA NIEVE Y EQUIPO

Nuestro viaje comenzó un miércoles justo después de año nuevo y así los niños no faltaron al colegio. Fue bastante fácil la subida a las montañas ya que no había tráfico o mucha nieve en la carretera. VÁYANSE A MITAD DE SEMANA si pueden, se los recomiendo. Será más agradable el camino. Desde San Diego, se tarda uno aproximadamente tres horas y media, en cambio, si salen un viernes por la tarde y regresan el domingo, probablemente se tardarán muchísimo más.

Apenas entrando a Big Bear nos pasaramos en una de las tienditas para comprar guantes de nieve, la  verdad hacen la diferencia y no son fáciles de encontrar en San Diego. Si necesitan ropa de invierno, esas tienditas ofrecen marcas genéricas a buenos precios.

Luego, nuestra cabañita, la verdad, una buena cabaña crea el ambiente para tener unas vacaciones acogedoras. La cabaña que rentamos en Big Bear a través de Airbnb fue encantadora y muy acogedora. 2 habitaciones con un montón de camas, a unos 10 minutos del Snow Summit Resort (donde se esquía, si están interesados en ir). A pesar de que era temporada alta pudimos obtener un buen precio.

Los niños salieron al aire libre de inmediato a jugar con la nieve, en realidad fue la primera vez que jugaron con la nieve por mucho tiempo, ¡así que imagínense la emoción!

Después de bajar todo y deacansar un ratico, salimos. Nosotros llevamos varias cosas de comida, pero pensábamos que podríamos comprar fácilmente lo que nos faltara en Big Bear, pero el automercado estaba super full y no tenía suficientes botellas de agua o chocolate caliente, por ejemplo!! Lo escencial, ja! ¡Las colas para pagar eran enormes; creo que es mejor llevar lo más que uno pueda desde la casa la próxima vez, por si acaso! TIP: Lleven toda la comida que puedan desde casa.

Ya para la cena nos fuimos el restaurante Gaby’s Latin Flavors, que estuvo bueno, no una cosa impresionante pero está bien para una familia pequeña. Para el alquiler de equipos de esquiar o snowboarding, fuimos a Goldsmith y, si se meten en Yelp o en su página web, consiguen cupones de descuentos. Es mucho más fácil rentar el equipo la noche anterior.

DÍA 2 – SNOWBOARDING, COMIDA, DE COMPRAS Y PARQUE

Cuando piensan en vacaciones de invierno, ¿piensan en esquiar o hacer snowboard, verdad? Bueno, la mitad de nosotros es así y la otra mitad no. ¡Así que nos dividimos!

Desayunamos en la cabaña y después dejamos a Derek y Adrian en el Snow Summit Resort. El tráfico es fuerte, así que prepárense a pasar un tiempo en el carro al menos que salgan super temprano, cosa que nosotros no hacemos.

Recomendaría establecer una hora para volver a reunirse en vez de intentar llamar o enviar mensajes porque la conexión en el resort no es buena.

Comer en los restaurantes de resort durante la temporada alta también se complica … Hay colas largas y comidas caras. Si pueden, compren comida para la familia y llévensela! Maya y yo le llevamos unas hamburguesas a Derek y a Adri sin problema, los encontramos en el estacionamiento en la parte de dropoff, donde uno se para por un ratico y después nos fuimos a continuar nuestro día.

Mientras ellos estaban snowboarding, Maya se moría por hacer un muñeco de nieve y deslizarse por la nieve, así que fuimos a la cabaña y eso mismo hicimos. También fuimos de compras al Big Bear Village, almorzamos en The Bone Yard y fuimos al parque Meadow (busqué un parque con un área de juegos para Mayita). ¡Me encantó el tiempo que pasé con ella solita!

Esa noche queríamos pedir cena para llevar a la cabaña y la ciudad estaba tan llena que ni las pizzerías aceptaban pedidos. A la final encontramos un buen lugar mexicano, Nuevo Vallarta Grill, la pedimos por teléfono y Derek la buscó.

DÍA 3 – CAFECITO Y DESLIZARSE EN TRINEO

El último día llegó super rápido y después de desayunar y hacer checkout en la cabaña, nos fuimos a una cafecito cercano bien local, me encanta ver lugarcitos como este: Moonridge Coffee Company, muy agradable y tienen muebles chéveres.

Todavía nos faltaba ir a deslizarnos en trineo, pero realmente no teníamos el tiempo ni el dinero para pasarnos todo el día en uno de los parques especializados. Al bajar por la montaña, está el resort Snow Valley, así que creo que la mejor decisión fue estacionarnos ahí en su estacionamiento ($10 todo el día y deben llegar temprano para conseguir un lugar), luego caminar (¡con mucho cuidado!) un poco hacia arriba y ahí mismo hay espacio al lado de la carretera para deslizarse.

Y después de un par de horas y muchas fotos más tarde, nos fuimos, nos divertimos mucho durante estas mini vacaciones, nos paramos de regreso para almorzar o casi cenar antes de llegar a la casa.
