By the title of this book I would never think I could enjoy reading it because, well, I know! I know bilingual is better! You really don’t have to make me read a book to tell me this! But I did read it and I learned even more than I knew…

The book is written by my 2 friends Ana Flores and Roxana Soto, owners of SpanglishBaby whom I met through this blog and who I couldn’t agree more with. The book is full of real life situations that happened to them and to other families and friends (hey even me and Adrian are mentioned!) and that makes it easy to read, you want to learn about what do other people do in real life.

I was also surprised to learn a lot more about pieces of history that I didn’t know by reading the book. The book starts with A Brief History of Latinos in the United States then goes into Latinos are as American as Apple Pie and A New Bilingual Parenting Revolution. That’s just the start! 

Then you get to learn about the different methods of raising a bilingual child, for example: The mL@H method (Minority Language at Home), the OPOL method (One Parent One Language) or the T&P method (Time and Place). Do you know which one you use or want to use? I use the OPOL method as I’ve told you before and it’s good to learn more about what I do so I can keep improving.

There are lots of practical tips in the bool for people to use like: 

• Three strategies parents raising bilingual children can use as soon as their child is born – Or even in the womb!
• How to create a plan of action to raise a bilingual child
• Other ways to keep the latino culture alive
• There is even a lost of bilingual website resources with scan codes to make it easier to go to the page! 

I identified with lots of parts in the book, along the post I have included some of my favorite quotes (they still give me the shivers when I read them!) from the book like: “I know bilingual is better because I’m a living proof” or “Our culture, our traditions, our language are the foundations upon which we build our identity”.

This book confirms what me and many others know already, that we are on the right track to teach or kids to be bilingual, it inspires me to continue and do even better on our journey! I highly recommend it!

Luego pasas a aprender de los diferentes métodos de criar a los niños bilingües, por ejemplo: El método mL@H (El idioma de la minoría es el usado en el hogar), el método OPOL (Un padre, un idioma) o el método T&P (Lugar y Momento). Tu sabes cuál usas o quieres usar? Nosotros usamos el método OPOL como ya les he contado anteriormente y es bueno leer más acerca de lo que ya hago y así aprender más y mejorar.

Hay muchos tips prácticos en el libro como por ejemplo:

Yo me identifiqué con muchísimas partes del libro y a lo largo del post puse mis citas favoritas (que hasta me dan escalofríos cuando las leo!) como: “Yo sé que ser bilingüe es mejor porque yo soy una prueba viviente” o “Nuestra cultura, nuestras tradiciones, nuestro idioma son las bases sobre las cuales construimos nuestra propia identidad”.


Este libro confirma lo que ya yo sé y lo que muchas personas sabemos, que estamos en el camino correcto de enseñar a nuestros hijos a crecer bilingües, me inspira a seguir en el camino que he escogido para nuestra familia y a mejorar aún más, lo recomiendo al 200%!
