In the Fall daylight starts to fade quickly and there is less time to take well-lit pictures while taking advantage of many Fall activities you probably want to do with the family. Today I want to help you with these tips so you can take better pictures during Fall without the stress.
All the pictures in this post were taken with my iPhone and even edited with the phone as well. When I don’t carry my DSLR camera, I take lots of photos with the iPhone.
The beauty of having smartphones is that we carry around a good camera almost 100% of the time so we can use them to help us create the best memories with photography. And when having a great reliable data plan like Straight Talk offers you can share them instantly via email or social media.
Here are the tips to help you take better pictures:
1. Pick the best time of the day. I always insist on going out in the afternoon and not mid-day when the sun is right above us and makes awful harsh shadows on everything. It’s much better to have the sun low, as it is before sunset or while sunrise (Although this last one would be hard!) Try and make it during the magic hour (about an hour before the sunset), when the light shines on everything so magically! When you discover this time of the day you won’t wanna go back! Guilty!!
Also, if you are visiting a place where there is lots of people like a Pumpkin Patch, try going during the week day for the pictures only, this way it won’t be crowded.
2. Have a list of places to go. Create this list of places your family really enjoys and feels comfortable in. We LOVE going to the bay or the beach and the kids immediately feel at ease, also a Pumpkin Patch because it’s a themed Fall favorite. In this case we didn’t have time to go to a big one but that’s ok, we went to a small one and they had fun, I took photos and then we might go to a big one and I don’t need to take more photos, this can work too.
3. Follow the Rule of Thirds. This one is very simple, divide your picture in 3 horizontal quadrants and 3 vertical quadrants, try to let the main point of interest of the photo in one of those line intersections or in one of the lines, this will create a better balance. This can be done while editing too, so you can crop it later if you need to.
<–The main point of interest here is in the middle and over all the lines, this photo is not following the rule of thirds.
4. Be Always Ready. I ask the kids to pose but even when they are not posing I keep taking pictures because spontaneous moments can happen and sometime you might catch the best spontaneous moment! Also, I keep a comb, hairspray and hair bands in the car, you never know when you might need them.
5. Always check the background. This can make a picture stand out! When we went of the small Pumpkin Patch which is located in a shopping mall parking lot, some of the backgrounds where store signs and cars! Oh no! So I tried to avoid it all the time in the photos. Even though you might see it, it’s very little and you don’t notice it prominent in all the photos.
6. Offer Surprises to the kids in exchange for photos. Since I do take a lot of photos of the kids, sometimes they get tired of it so I offer surprises, I either have some candy they usually don’t eat regularly or some toys or offer to take them to a fun place. This always helps, hey who wants to work without pay? LOL
7. Tell a story. If we take too many posed pictures we might forget how the moment was. So it’s much nicer that when you look at them you’re able to read a story without words. Our story when we visited the Pumpkin Patch was we walked around, saw all the different pumpkins and then decided to get some of the little ones, the kids picked them and bagged them, they had fun!
8. Always edit your pictures. You don’t need to be a photographer or have your photos on the computer to do this, with so many apps now available this is easy! My absolute favorites are VSCO Cam and Instagram. All the photos here were edited with VSCO Cam, even if it’s just adding some brightness and contrast, that helps a lot! Keep in mind to add the same style of editing to the group of pictures so they all look like they belong together too.

8 Tips para tomar fotos en el otoño
Aclaratoria: Este post es pagado y es parte de una campaña con Straight Talk Wireless. Como siempre todas las opiniones, historias e ideas son 100% mías.
En el otoño la luz del día comienza a desvanecerse rápidamente y hay menos tiempo para tomar fotos con buena luz natural mientras que se aprovecha de muchas actividades que probablemente quieran hacer con la familia. Hoy quiero ayudarles dándoles estos tips para que pueda tomar mejores fotos durante el otoño sin el estrés.
Todas las fotos de este post fueron tomadas con mi iPhone e incluso editadas con el teléfono también. Cuando no cargo mi cámara réflex digital, uso mucho mi iPhone como cámara.
Lo mejor de tener teléfonos inteligentes es que tenemos una cámara super buena casi que el 100% del tiempo así que las podemos usar para crear los mejores recuerdos con fotografía. Y el tener un gran plan de data fiable como el que ofrece Straight Talk donde las puedes compartir al instante a través de correo electrónico o las redes sociales es lo máximo!
Aquí están los tips para ayudarte a tomar mejores fotos:
1. Elige el mejor momento del día. Yo siempre insisto en salir por la tarde y no a medio día cuando el sol está justo encima de nosotros y hace que las sombras sean muy fuertes en todo. Es mucho mejor tener el sol bajo, como está atardeciendo o al amanecer (Aunque esto último sería difícil!) Trata de tomar fotos durante la hora mágica (alrededor de una hora antes de la puesta del sol), cuando la luz brilla en todo como por arte de magia! ¡Cuando descubras este momento del día ya no querrás volver atrás! ¡Yo soy culpable de esto!
Además, si están visitando un lugar donde hay mucha gente como un “Pumpkin Patch”, trata de ir durante un día de semana sólo para tomar fotos y no durante el fin, de esta manera no habrá mucha gente.
2. Ten una lista de lugares a donde quieres ir. Haz esta lista de lugares que tu familia realmente disfruta y donde se sienten cómodos. A nosotros nos encanta ir a la bahía o la playa y los niños apenas llegan se sienten como en su casa, también a un Pumpkin Patch porque es uno de los sitios favoritos para ir en el otoño y puedo tomar fotos muy típicas con calabazas y fondos lindos. En este caso no tuvimos tiempo de ir a uno de esos patchs grandes, nos fuimos a uno pequeño y se divirtieron igual, tomé fotos y luego podemos ir a uno grande cuando tengamos tiempo y entonces probablemente ya no tome fotos ese otro día.
<–El punto de interés principal aquí está en el centro y cae sobre todas las líneas, esta foto no está siguiendo la regla de los tercios.
4. Siempre listos. Yo les pido a los niños que posen, pero incluso cuando no están posando sigo tomando fotos porque esos momentos inesperados pueden ocurrir ¡y en cualquier momento te pueden poner la mejor pose espontánea! También guardo un peine, spray para el pelo y colitas en el carro, nunca se sabe cuándo se pueden necesitar.
5. Siempre chequea el fondo de tu foto. ¡Esto puede hacer que una foto destaque! Cuando fuimos a el pequeño Pumpkin Patch que está en el estacionamiento de un centro comercial, si tomaba algunas fotos podía ver los avisos de restaurantes y carros. ¡Eso es terrible! Así que traté de evitar tomar fotos por ese lado. Las que tomé todavía tienen pero es poquito, lo más poquito que pude.
6. Ofrécele a los niños sorpresitas a cambio de fotos. Como les tomo un montón de fotos a los niños, a veces se cansan, así que les ofrezco sorpresas, les tengo chucherías de esas que por lo general no comen regularmente o algunos juguetes o ofrezco llevarlos a un lugar divertido. Esto siempre ayuda, además ¿quien quiere trabajar sin pago? Jeje!
7. Cuenta una historia. Si tomamos muchas fotos posadas podemos olvidar cómo fue el momento. Es mucho mejor que al ver las fotos en el futuro podamos leer un cuento sin palabras. Nuestra historia cuando visitamos el Pumpkin Patch fue que caminamos, vimos todas los tipos de calabazas que habían y luego decidimos escoger algunas de las más pequeñas, los niños las escogieron y las metieron en las bolsas, s¡e divirtieron bastante!
8. Edita tus fotos siempre. No es necesario ser fotógrafo profesional o tener tus fotos en la computadora para hacer esto, ¡con tantas aplicaciones disponibles ahora en el teléfono esto es fácil! Mis apps favoritas son VSCO Cam e Instagram. Todas las fotos aquí fueron editadas con VSCO Cam, incluso si es sólo añadir un poco de brillo y contraste, ¡eso ayuda mucho! Tengan en cuenta que añadir el mismo estilo de edición para un grupo de imágenes es muy buena idea porque así todas las fotos se ven muy bien como grupo.
