In Spanish “Rosca de reyes” is the Three Kings Cake. A cake or more like sweet bread that is eaten on Three Kings Day or the Epiphany (January 6th). This tradition is not something we are used to doing in Venezuela, where I come from. But it is very traditional in Mexico and in Spain; we do have lots of traditions left from Spain in Venezuela but I wonder now why didn’t this one stick in?
Well, it doesn’t matter because that’s the fun part of being a multicultural family, I lived in Mexico and experienced myself how they did this tradition so now I researched a little bit and found out some of the meanings it has and made our own rosca to include it in our traditions too!
The rosca o roscón de reyes is served on this day symbolizing the day baby Jesus was presented to society when the Three Kings arrived. There is a plastic baby Jesus figure hidden inside the cake symbolizing the way the Holy Family hid Jesus from King Herodes. Whoever finds the baby Jesus figure in the cake is responsible of him, they have to take him to church to be blessed on Candlemas day (February 2nd).
In Mexico the responsibility is also to host a party that day with tamales!
The bread is round with a hole like a donut shaped to simulate a crown (although in Mexico it has become oval to be able to accommodate bigger parties) and it’s traditionally decorated with candied fruit on top that look like the jewels on the crown.
I have never made a rosca de reyes before so I thought it would be a great time to learn. I found a recipe online but decided not to go so traditional on it since I’m not so fond of the candied fruit, we added chocolate, almonds and cherries instead. It was a very fun experience because we made not one but three roscas at the same time!! Maya, Adrian and my mom made one each!! I helped and directed them all!
The recipe didn’t turn out so great, that’s why I’m not sharing it with you but the experience of baking the Three Kings Bread was the best, we all shared lots of time in the kitchen, learned about the tradition and then ate it with hot chocolate and coffee.
But let’s not forget about the cleaning part, the favorite Libman products that helped me out for this task where three (coincidence??!! PS: The tradition of the Three Kings we do in our family has been that they bring the kids money, the kids have to lay some of their shoes by the bed on the night of January 5th and they will bring the money there by January 6th.

La tradición de la rosca de reyes

En muchos países se celebra el día de Reyes con una rosca de reyes. Es el día de la Epifanía, el 6 de enero. Esta tradición no es algo que estamos acostumbrados a hacer en Venezuela, de donde yo vengo. Pero es muy tradicional en México y en España; nosotros en Venezuela tenemos un montón de tradiciones que vienen de España pero me pregunto ahora ¿por qué esta no habrá pasado?
Bueno, no importa, porque esta es la parte divertida de ser una familia multicultural, viví en México por varios años y celebré con ellos esta tradición por lo que ahora me provocó investigar un poco más acerca de ella y aprendí de los significados que tiene. Así entonces decidí hacer nuestra propia rosca de reyes e incluir esta tradición en nuestras tradiciones también!
La rosca o roscón de Reyes se sirve en este día 6 de enero simbolizando el día en que se presentó al niño Jesús a la sociedad cuando los Reyes Magos llegaron a verlo. En la rosca se esconde una figurita de plástico del niño Jesús lo cual simboliza la forma en que la Sagrada Familia tuvo que esconder a Jesús de Herodes para que no lo mataran. El que encuentre la figura del niñito Jesús en la rosca es responsable de él, lo debe llevar a la iglesia para ser bendecido el día de la Candelaria (el 2 de febrero).
En México la responsabilidad incluye también organizar una fiesta ese día con tamales!
La rosca es redonda con un hueco en el medio estilo donut simulando una corona (aunque en México se ha convertido en óvalo para poder dar cabida a grupos más grandes) y tradicionalmente se decora con fruta confitada las cuales dan alegoría a las joyas de la corona.
Nunca he hecho una rosca de reyes antes, así que pensé que sería un buen momento para aprender. El asociarme con Libman para este artículo me ayudó mucho ya que son fabricantes de productos de limpieza para el hogar con una amplia colección de productos de calidad, así sabía que después de todo el desastre de la cocina limpiar sería mucho más fácil.
Encontré una receta en la internet, pero decidí no hacerla tan tradicional ya que no soy muy amante de las fruticas confitadas, le agregamos chocolate, almendras y cerezas. Fue una experiencia muy divertida porque no hicimos no una, sino tres roscas al mismo tiempo!! Maya, Adrian y mi mamá hicieron una cada uno!! Yo los ayudé y los dirigí a todos, jeje!
La receta no resultó tan buena, por eso no se las comparto, pero la experiencia de hacer la rosca de reyes fue cheverísima, compartimos bastante tiempo en la cocina, aprendimos más de la tradición y luego nos la comimos con chocolate caliente y café.
Pero no nos olvidemos de la parte de limpieza del desastre que hicimos!! Los productos favoritos de Libman que me ayudaron para esta tarea fueron tres (creen que es coincidencia?? !! Creo que poco a poco estamos estableciendo nuestras propias tradiciones familiares, siempre adquiriendo más y aprendiendo cada vez que hay una oportunidad! Estoy lista para hacer otra rosca para el año que viene!!
PD: La tradición del día de Reyes que hacemos en nuestra familia ha sido que los reyes traen dinero a los niños. Los niños tienen que poner algunos de sus zapatos junto a la cama en la noche del 5 de enero y le traen el dinero allí el 6 de enero en la mañana.
