8 Things to take on a Family Hike {Giveaway}

Ever since we arrived in San Diego you know I’ve been into enjoying the outdoors a lot more but I didn’t pay much attention to hiking. Hiking is one of those things that seemed kind of boring to me.

Well not anymore, because when you have little kids they are able to help you see things so different and they MAKE you enjoy things you might not enjoyed before, it’s pretty cool.

Derek is the one that took the kids hiking more often without me and about a month ago they hiked right here behind where we live and made a video of the hike using the Sony action cam. Oh my goodness, the kids came back all excited and telling me all these adventures of what happened during the hike. They also had me watching the video of the hike 10 times.

So I decided to join them the next time after that and it was super fun. Just seeing them embrace nature and have so much fun, makes me have even more fun, that’s it! So easy!!

When we go hiking we don’t bring much but there are some essentials we do have to pack, that’s why I thought making this list of things to take on a hike would come in handy all the time; it;s easy to forget a couple so here we go:

8 Things to take on a Family Hike

  1. Hand sanitizer. I know you’ll be getting dirty anyways but it comes very useful when you least expect it.
  2. Sunscreen. Always be protected from the sun!
  3. Water. Lots to keep those adventurers hydrated.
  4. Snacks. Fruit, nuts, bars. They can’t get enough snacks when we’re out, we’re loving the Fisher Nut Exactly snack bites, super easy, healthy (no artificial preservatives) and convenient to take to the hikes!
  5. Light. If you’re going later in the day.
  6. First aid kit. A simple kit with bandaids, antiseptic and pain killers should be fine.
  7. Hat. Another sun protection.
  8. Camera. Always document your adventures! The cellphone camera should be ok too.
The other day as soon as we got to the hiking place Maya needed a bandaid and I had forgotten the first aid kit, now for next time we go it’s easy to refer to this list and make sure I have it all!

Ok, so now during the summer one of our activities on the list is to go hiking to new places. So far we’ve been to 2 places but we have so much more to explore!

I go on what I call urban hikes — long walks around Chicago. I guess it's not the same as a nature walk, but I don't have very much nature nearby. What I like to do is have a general idea of where I want to end up, but the exact path isn't planned. Since I don't know what food will be available along the way (and because I'm trying to be healthy and not spend all my money eating out) I usually bring a couple pieces of fruit and some water.

We just went on a hike yesterday. I always bring sunglasses, for myself and kids. And my cell phone is my camera and also comes in handy when we want to look up a certain bug or plant to find it's name.
