The San Diego Central Library is brand new, they opened just a year ago, the building is quite impressive with a metal dome on top and when you enter the huge lobby it feels quite big indoors as well, it’s powerful.
That first impression makes you want to enter and investigate each floor, and there is plenty to see.
I went with Mayita for the first time so I had no chance to investigate much, but we did walk around the children’s area a lot and it is great.
For the Kids
There are always so many activities for the kids at the libraries and this one is no exception.
- They have a looong row of computers with several apps ready for the kids to use, play and learn. That was the first thing Mayita wanted to do when we went.
- Craft materials and coloring. We have been to the Central Library two times and it has been during the weekend, both times they had crafts for the kids set-up on the tables ready for them to just jump in.
- Large toys such as the elephants Maya is sitting on (on the photos) and whiteboards to play with.
- A huge touch screen for children, that one is at the entrance of the children’s area, very cool for the little ones.
The children’s collection of books is quite large, I was overwhelmed with so many options to choose from, I wanted to take lots of books! They also have quite a lot in Spanish, I really liked that and took advantage of it. We took some books home and the good thing is that you can return them at any other library in San Diego, wonderful!
I loved the areas available to sit and read in addition to the regular tables, for example a corner with some chairs, small tables and lamps that looked very cozy and with perfect natural light coming in through the windows.
Shopping
The shop of the library is coming out to an internal patio/garden, don’t leave without visiting the shop! It’s just so pretty and they always have beautiful products available, it;s not only books, imagine it like a little museum shop. I didn’t take pictures of it but they have a page on Facebook and an Instagram account where you can see some of the pretty things they sell.
You could easily spend a whole day in the library, lots to do, we hope to return soon!

La Biblioteca Pública Central de San Diego es nuevecita, la abrieron apenas hace un año, el edificio es bastante impresionante, tiene una cúpula encima de metal y cuando uno entra a ese lobby se queda sorprendido de lo grande que se ve adentro.
Con esa primera impresión provoca entrar a investigar lo que hay en cada piso y la verdad hay bastante.
Yo me fuí con Mayita un día y no tuve chance de investigar mucho todos los pisos, pero si recorrí todo el área infantil. Es una maravilla.
Para los niños
En las bibliotecas siempre hay tantas actividades para los niños, es muy chévere, esta no se queda atrás.
- Tienen una fila laaaarga de computadoras con varios programas para que los niños se sienten a jugar y aprender. Eso fué lo primero que Mayita quiso hacer.
- Materiales para manualidades y para colorear. Nosotros hemos ido 2 veces y ha sido en fin de semana, las dos veces que fuimos habían manualidades en las mesas para que los niños se sentaran directo a hacerlas.
- Juguetes grandes, como los elefantes donde Maya está sentada y las fichas en la pizarra blanca.
- Una pantalla enorme “touch screen” para los niños, esa está a la entrada de la zona infantil, muy chévere para los chiquitos.
La colección de libros que tienen para niños es bastante grande, yo estaba medio abrumada con tanto, es que provoca llevarse muchos libros. También tienen bastantes en español, eso me gustó mucho. Yo me llevé varios y lo bueno es que los puedes devolver en cualquier otra biblioteca de San Diego, ¡una maravilla!
Los espacios que tiene para sentarse a leer además de las mesas normales me encantaron, por ejemplo los rincones con sillas, mesitas pequeñas y lámparas se veían muy acogedores y algo muy bueno es que les llega bastante luz.
De compras
En un patio interno se encuentra la tiendita de la biblioteca, no hay que dejar de pasar por ahí! Es que es tan linda y siempre tienen unos productos preciosos, a esta no le tomé fotos pero tiene una página en Facebook y una cuenta de Instagram donde pueden ver algunas de las cosas tan lindas que venden.
Es como para pasarse todo un día ahí metidos, hay mucho que hacer, ¡esperamos volver pronto!
