Photography Talk: In Search of the Light

Since becoming a photographer and learning more and more about photography I realized I have become a little obsessed with the search of great light, but I don’t take that obsession as a bad thing. I think it’s great.

I love it because it makes me learn constantly, I am becoming more observant each and every day I shoot. We all know it takes practice and when you practice it shows.

So when going out for walks with the kids, they have enjoy their bikes and I enjoy having my camera on-hand to keep practicing. 

For example, the other day we went to ride bikes by the beach and there are these little alleys that connect the streets to the beach and give access to the houses located there. 

Some of them have such a beautiful collection of plants and depending on the time of day when you are walking by that alley the light hits in an amazing way that it is irresistible. Usually during the sunset, the light is low, not so strong and it’s blurred beautifully. 

That’s when I start thinking: I have to take pictures here, I have to, everybody STOP please! Good thing I have these couple of models I can ask to pose.

Mayita was very tired at that point and I only snapped one good one of her, then Adrian came and posed nicely and then I tried with both but it just didn’t work out. It was such a perfect place and moment of light! I was sad to not have a good one with both of them but the point is I tried, I saw the light, I recognized it and I still got some good ones. Now all the factors are not always there, specially when it isn’t a planned photoshoot.

And once you start searching for that perfect light your eyes will be able to find it faster and faster. Even though sometimes I don’t even want to go out at noon for example because I know the light is terrible I still find some spots, so you never know.

Desde que soy fotógrafa y he aprendido más y más acerca de la fotografía me di cuenta de que me he obsesionado con la búsqueda de la luz, una buena luz, pero yo no tomo esa obsesión como algo malo., me parece algo muy chévere.

Me encanta porque me ayuda a aprender constantemente, me he convertido más observadora día a día. Todos sabemos que se necesita práctica y cuando se practica, se nota.

Así que la hora de salir a pasear con los niños, ellos disfrutan con sus bicis y yo disfruto con mi cámara para seguir practicando.

El otro día fuimos a pasear bici por la playa y por ahí hay unos callejones chiquitos que conectan las calles a la playa y permiten que la gente pase a las casas que están allí.

Algunos de esos callejones tienen unas plantas bellísimas, y dependiendo de la hora del día que uno esté pasando por ahí, la luz ilumina de una manera tan impresionante que es irresistible, usualmente la mejor hora es el atardecer, la luz está bajita y no es muy fuerte, se difumina muy bella. 

Ahí es cuando yo me pongo a pensar: tengo que tomar fotos aquí, ya, tengo que probar como se ve esto en la cámara ¡todo el mundo ALTO por favor! Lo bueno es que tengo este par de modelos que les puedo pedir que posen.

Mayita estaba muy cansada en ese momento y sólo me salió una foto buena de ella, entonces Adrian llegó y posó muy bien y luego traté con los dos juntos, pero simplemente no funcionó. Estaba tan perfecto el lugar y el momento de luz pero el punto es que lo intenté, vi la luz, la reconocí y todavía me quedaron algunas fotos buenas. Todos los factores no siempre están allí, especialmente cuando no es una sesión de fotos planeada.

Una vez que se comienza a buscar esa luz perfecta tus ojos serán capaces de encontrarla cada vez más rápido. A pesar de que a veces no quiero ni salir al mediodía, por ejemplo, porque sé que la luz es muy fuerte y no es buena, resulta que encuentro luz buena en algunos sitios de sombra, por lo que nunca se sabe.

Didn’t get the perfect photo of them together that day but I practiced with the beautiful light, still worth it! – No encontré la foto perfecta de los dos juntos ese día pero practiqué con una luz bellísima, algo que valió la pena al 100%!
