Cool Places in San Diego: Bates Nut Farm

I’ve never heard about a nut farm before! That caught my attention right away after learning about Bates Nut Farm.

It’s located about an hour away from the main San Diego area. We went there on February to celebrate Maya’s birthday Picnic and it was great. There are several activities you can do while visiting so I wanted to show you here all you can do.

The first thing you can do is visit the farm animals, it’s similar to a petting zoo only that you get to feed the animals and touch them from the outside of the fence. Kids loved this and you can buy some corn to feed them for 25 cents a handful.

Then you have to check out the main store which is where they sell their nuts and MUCH more. I was amazed at how many products they have available. First they sell all their nuts in bags, they have great variety but they also seem to package a huge variety of candy, old time favorites, new ones, seasonal, different types of chocolates, ufff, many many choices. 

There are some candies that you can bag yourself from the barrels too as you can see in the photos, they all look so much more appetizing there!

And don’t you think they only have nuts and candy, they have different type of snacks, they have coffees, hot sauce, honey, teas and many many more food products.

At the back of the store there is another area where it turns into a gift store and they are all type of pretty items for kids and adults. We spent a whole lot of time browsing all they had.

After browsing and shopping the store we had our picnic, the area is nice surrounded by trees and mountains, there weren’t so many people that day and we had a big space for us. It’s perfect for a family picnic day. Highly recommend to visit in a weekend, you’ll have fun!

Oh and this is important: You must know that they do tours of the farm but NOT on weekends and during the week it has to be a group of 10 or more. I think that it would be great to have them on the weekend but oh well. I am still curious on the process of the nuts, maybe I get to go again and tour one day, who knows!

Nunca había oído hablar de una granja de nueces. Eso fué lo primero que me llamó la atención apenas vi que existía este lugar: Bates Nut Farm. 

Se encuentra ubicado a una hora de distancia del área de la ciudad de San Diego. Fuimos allí en febrero para celebrar el cumple de Maya estilo Picnic y fue bien chévere. Hay varias actividades que se pueden hacer cuando uno va, así que les quiero mostrar aquí todo lo que pueden hacer. 

Lo primero es visitar a los animales de granja, es parecido a un “Petting Zoo” (donde se puede tocar a los animales y darles comida), aquí se les puede tocar y dar comida pero desde afuera de la reja. Los niños estaban encantados y uno puede comprar un poquito de maíz para darles de comer, cuesta 25 centavos por un grupito mas o menos de la cantidad que cabe en una mano.

Después de esto hay que ir la tienda principal, que es donde se venden las nueces y mucho mucho más. Me quedé sorprendida de la cantidad de productos que tienen. No solo venden todas las nueces que cultivan en bolsas pero también tienen una gran variedad de dulces, caramelos de los de antes, los modernos, los de temporada, muchos tipos de chocolates, ufff, muchas muchas opciones.

Hay algunos caramelos que uno los puede agarrar de los barriles y embolsar uno mismo, como pueden ver en las fotos, así se ven super ricos y provoca comprarlos!

Y no crean que sólo tienen nueces, caramelos y chocolates, también tienen muchos tipos de snacks, tienen cafés, salsa picante, miel, tés y muchísimos más productos.

En el fondo de la tienda hay otra área que se convierte en una tienda de regalos y venden todo tipo de artículos bonitos para niños y adultos. Pasamos un montón de tiempo viendo todo lo que tenían y queriendo comprar un montón de cosas.

Después de ver muchas cosas lindas y comprar en la tienda nos fuimos a hacer nuestro picnic, la zona es bien agradable, rodeada de árboles y montañas, no había mucha gente ese día y tuvimos un espacio bien grande para nosotros. Es perfecto para un picnic familiar. Lo recomiendo para visitar en un fin de semana, se divertirán y se relajarán de seguro!

Ah, y algo muy importante: Ellos si hacen recorridos de los cultivos y de su proceso pero no lo hacen en los fines de semana. Durante la semana si lo hacen pero tiene que ser un grupo de 10 o más. Creo que sería muy bueno que los tuvieran durante el fin de semana también pero bueno, a lo mejor un día de estos deciden abrirlo? Si me quedé con la curiosidad de ver el proceso del cultivo de las nueces, a lo mejor en el futuro me tocará algún día, quien sabe!
