This image below is what welcomes you when you enter Tijuana traveling from San Diego to México through San Isidro. I can’t believe I had been living here for more than two years and eventhough I had visit Tijuana before I didn’t make it yet in these two years.
Well that changed a lot because I started driving to Mexico to go to the dentist. I had some work to do and through my insurance here it would have cost me a lot of money so I decided to go to TJ.
I’m not going to talk about my experience with the dentist today (everything went well in that sense and I still need to go back for more later), what I want to share is what happened right after I crossed that huge Mexico sign…
I felt inspired!
But inspired of what? Well, just the change of scenery is always an inspiration. The feeling that not everything is so strictly organized gives me a relaxed state of mind. At the beginning I was actually not feeling so relaxed because I didn’t know my way around but I learned my way around quickly after making several mistakes and getting lost for a little.
Once my head is in a relaxed state of mind it starts to absorb the new visuals, the culture, the people, everything that my senses perceive and I get excited. It’s funny how that works, I then want to stop everywhere, talk to more people, see more places. You see, we are so close but yet it’s a totally different country, a country where I lived three years of my life, a country that speaks Spanish and a place to just let you invoke different vibes and get inspired! I think it might be like taking a mini mini vacation.. cool!
On my first visit I had to stop in a Nevería which is where they sell paletas, ice cream, aguas and fruit. My favorite thing to get is a fruit plate, it is amazing! Sliced fresh fruit with yogurt, granola and honey. I also had an Horchata which is my favorite agua fresca but then on other days I tried others that I’ve never tried before like the pink one which is a combination of several fruits and milk and sweetened condensed milk, it’s super sweet!
That was my first day which also took me 3 hours on traffic in line to get into the US 🙁 But the next time I took another entrance that is further but it takes much less time to cross, now I know!
What I like to do when I visit
I have gone to the same taco shop every time. I first asked my dentist for places to recommend but the places I got where kind of big and more touristy so I just stopped in the first taco place I saw that looked yummy and I wasn’t wrong: Taquería Los Albañiles, I sat in the bar and ate chicken tacos which is about the only taco I eat since I don’t eat red meat. It was so yummy, and I love that I can just sit there and get the food right away, talk to the lady and the guy cooking, so now I want to go try another one but I kind of love this one!
I always always need to stop by the grocery shop, and the one that has a great bakery: Gigante. Oh my goodness, I always want to get all the pan dulce there, if I buy a little then we eat it too fast and if I buy too much it goes bad in our house, so I need to learn to get the right amount, wish I had guests that came by and helped us out to eat them!
I want to stop at every shop and walk around! I walked around one block the other day, there were clothing stores, shoes, school supplies and fabrics. I stopped there because of the fabrics, I was looking for colorful vinyl and I saw these little bags made out of vinyl too. That was great inspiration for craft projects, just the fact that I can’t see the same type of environment and objects here helps a lot.
There are many many more places I want to look into, so there will be more visits and I also got excited thinking about bringing the family and go explore other places around the beach, hey and it is such a great way for the kids to practice Spanish and be immersed in a latin culture, now we have to get them their passports active and go for it!
I also took my mom one day and we discovered a great market, we didn’t have enough time to stay but I want to go back and take lots of photos.
So this traveling from San Diego to Mexico will become a little series here in the blog and whenever I have more mexico photos I want to share here with you.

De San Diego a México
Esta imagen de aquí arriba es el panorama que te da la bienvenida cuando entras en Tijuana viajando en carro desde San Diego a México a través de San Isidro. No puedo creer que yo tenía aquí en San Diego más de dos años y aunque visité Tijuana mucho antes de mudarme aquí nunca había ido durante estos dos años.
Bueno, eso ha cambiado mucho porque comencé a ir a México para ir al dentista. Me tenía que hacer unas cuantas cosas en los dientes y con mi seguro de aquí me habría costado mucho dinero, así que decidí ir a Tijuana.
Hoy no vengo a contarles de mi experiencia con el dentista (todo ha ido bien en ese sentido y todavía tengo que regresar para otras cositas), lo que quiero compartirles hoy es lo que ocurrió justo después de que crucé ese enorme anuncio que dice México…
Me inspiré!
Pero de qué me inspiré? Bueno, sólo el cambio de escenario es siempre una inspiración. La sensación de que no todo está tan estrictamente organizado me da un sentido de tranquilidad (al menos por el tiempo en que estoy ahí!). Al principio en realidad no me sentía tan relajada porque no sabía bien a donde ir, las rutas, las calles, pero poco a poco aprendí después de equivocarme y perderme un poco.
Una vez que mi cabeza está en un estado relajado como que la mente comienza a absorber los nuevos paisajes y cosas que veo, la cultura, la gente, en fín todo lo que mis sentidos perciben y me emociono. Es curioso cómo eso funciona, entonces me pasa que quiero bajarme en todas partes, hablar con más gente, ver más lugares. Es que me doy cuenta, estamos tan cerca, pero sin embargo es un país totalmente diferente, un país donde viví tres años de mi vida y me trae recuerdos, un país que habla español y me acerca más a mi cultura y un lugar para dar permiso a que diferentes vibras y fuentes de inspiración le lleguen a uno! Es así como tomarse una mini mini vacación no? Es chévere!
En mi primera visita me tuve que parar en una Nevería que es donde venden paletas, helados, aguas y frutas. Mi cosa favorita de pedir ahí es un plato de frutas, es buenísimo! Fruta fresca picada con yogurt, granola y miel. También pedí una horchata que es mi agua fresca favorita, pero luego en otros días he probado otras aguas que nunca había probado como una rosada que es una combinación de varias frutas, leche y leche condensada azucarada, es como que muy dulce!
Ese fue mi primer día, el cual también me tardé 3 horas en la cola para entrar a los EE.UU.: Pero la vez siguiente me metí por otra entrada que está más lejos pero se toma mucho menos tiempo para cruzar, ahora ya sé!
Lo que me gusta hacer cuando voy
He ido a la misma taquería casi todos los días que voy. La primera vez le pedí recomendaciones a mi dentista de lugares para comer pero los lugares que me dió son como restaurantes un poco grandes y más turísticos, así que lo que hice fue pararme en el primer lugar de tacos que vi y que parecía bueno y me fué bien: Taquería Los Albañiles, me senté en la barra y comí tacos de pollo, que es casi el único taco que como porque yo no como carnes rojas. Estaba muy rico, y me encanta que me puedo sentar ahí y pedir la comida de inmediato, ver a la señora que cocina y conversar con el que me sirve, ahora quiero ir a probar otro restaurancito pero es que este me encanta!
Siempre siempre me tengo que meter en el automercado, y el que tiene una gran panadería muy buena: Gigante. ¡Ay no! Siempre me quiero comprar todo el pan dulce de ahí, si compro un poquito es muy poquito y se acaba rápido en la casa y si compro mucho sobra y se echa a perder, así que tengo que aprender a comprar la cantidad adecuada, ojalá tuviera invitados en la casa a los que brindarles pancitos de estos todo el tiempo, así puedo comprar bastantes siempre, jeje!
Me quiero parar en todas las tiendas y caminar por ahí! Caminé por una cuadra el otro día donde habían tiendas de ropa, zapatos, útiles escolares y telas. Me bajé ahí mas que todo por las tiendas de telas, me llaman mucho la atención los viniles con patrones y colores lindos y vi unas bolsitas hechas de vinil también. Eso por ejemplo fue una gran inspiración para mis proyectos de manualidades, sólo el hecho de que no puedo ver el mismo tipo de cosas aquí, eso ayuda mucho.
Hay muchos, muchos más lugares que quiero ir, por lo que habrá más visitas y también me emocioné pensando en llevar a la familia e ir a explorar otros lugares alrededor de la playa, bueno y es una manera muy buena para que los niños practiquen español y que estén inmersos en una cultura latina, ahora tenemos que arreglar que sus pasaportes estén al día para ir!
También me llevé a mi mamá un día y descubrimos un mercadito chévere, no tuvimos tiempo suficiente para quedarnos, pero quiero volver y tomar muchas fotos.
Así que este post de viaje desde San Diego a México se va a convertir en una pequeña serie aquí en el blog y cada vez que tenga más fotos las compartiré aquí con ustedes.

February 8, 2014 at 1:49 amQue lindo post! Me trae muchos recuerdos, buenos recuerdos. La ensalada de frutas, el panecito, la nieve. Mi mamá siempre que me visitaba me traia coyotas y coricos, me hizo recordarla, aunque la recuerdo todos los dias, estas fotos me la recordaron mas.
La foto del taco me dio hambre y mucho antojo. : )

February 11, 2014 at 6:54 pmOmg! It has been 12yrs since I have been to Tijuana. Born and raised in Los Angeles, TJ was our special time for us siblings and our parents to "bond". There was never more than 3 months that passed for us to get our "TJ fix". Thank you so much for posting this on your blog and for possibly doing it more frequently. I will be keeping my eyes (& my computer) for updates on this blog.
