Top Bloguera Retreat 2013 – The Next Level

I was honored to be invited to participate again on the Top Bloguera Retreat this year. 

This time it was New York at the Waldorf Astoria hotel, I’ve never stayed in that side of town, if you don’t know it, the Waldorf is super luxurious and it’s worth a visit.

I met Vanessa from the blog De Su Mamá at the airport and we took the train together to the hotel. First time I’ve done this and I’m glad I did it with her, now I can do it again no problem!

That right there (riding the train with Vanessa) was the very first experience of the retreat. Getting to see and chat with the other bloggers is the BEST part of all this. Why? Because we start to brainstorm together and little by little things start happening. 

Remember what I told you about last year’s Top Bloguera Retreat? It’s work, so the first day we started early with introductions of each other and with sessions of several women professionals in different industries. 

The parts that I liked the most where when we got to work on us, for example Francesca Escoto (Business coach) explained the stages of a business and told us to pick the stage each of us is at, then we had to sit in the same table with them and work on what you need to do next. 

If it was for me I could have stayed doing that the whole day. I was having a great chat with Betty from My Friend Betty Says about her goals (It is always easier to see other people’s challenges and help them because you are looking from the outside in). But we didn’t have much time to continue on that because the agenda was jam packed!

Yes, this time we went to the United Nations, first we visited the Ford Foundation and had a meeting with 3 officials: Ana María Currea, from UNDP-GEF (United Nations Development Program), Chantal Line Carpentier, from the UNDP Sustainable Development Programs and Aaron Sherinian from the United Nations Foundation.

It is very interesting to hear from all of them what the UN is doing. What captured my attention the most is the way they do use social media. When we were there it was almost time for the 2013 Social Good Summit that happens every year so they told us that they were having the initiative to really listen to what people want for the world.

You think that if you tweet something, it’s just a tweet? Think again, now a days even the UN has hashtags. They created #2030NOW so ANYBODY can voice what they want the world to be in 2030. They are listening and I invite you to participate, what do you want the world to be like in 2030?

After the time spent there we toured the UN, we visited several councils (That’s what the huge meeting rooms are called), all of them were amazing, my favorite one was the first one: The Economic and Social Council, because the roof there is left unfinished with the purpose to remind us all that there is always something we can do to make other places better in the world.

One of the things that captured my attention (of my ever-so-visual-self ) was the style and design the building has, like a mid-century look, I kept looking at the amazing textures on the walls and the colors of the chairs. Plus the side of me that loves languages and translation (did you know I studied to be a legal interpreter once??) was fascinated to see the interpreter window cubes and the equipment on each chair.

The next step is always on us, I am thankful to have these opportunities that help us grow. This job gets lonely and like I said at the beginning, when we bloggers get together is when the ideas start to dance and find bigger ballrooms. I know for sure now that the 3 Amigas Gift Guide project started somehow last year in a conversation during Top Blogueras Retreat. Can’t wait to keep going forward with this blog and my business. After the retreat, Latism conference started and my sister came to participate too, I’ll tell you about all that in another post. Tuve el honor de haber sido invitada a participar en el retiro de Top Blogueras de nuevo este año.

Esta vez fué en Nueva York  en el hotel Waldorf Astoria, nunca me había quedado por esos lados, si no lo conocen, es un hotel lujoso que vale la pena visitar.

Me encontré con mi amiga Vanessa del blog De Su Mamá  en el aeropuerto al llegar y nos fuimos en tren juntas al hotel, primera vez que lo hacía y que chévere que fué con ella, ahora para la próxima ya se cómo es y no tendré problema!

Ya esa experiencia con Vanessa la considero yo la primera experiencia del retiro. La oportunidad de encontrarnos en persona y tener tiempo para hablar en la vida real es lo MEJOR de todo. Porqué? Porque es un chance sin distracciones que nos permite como hacer tormenta de ideas y poco a poco cosas nuevas empiezan a pasar.

Se acuerdan los que les conté el año pasado del retiro de Top Blogueras? Se va a trabajar! Así que el primer día empezamos temprano, todas nos presentamos y escuchamos charlas de ejecutivas de diferentes áreas de negocios. 

Lo que a mi más me gusta es cuando nos ayudan y nos dan tiempo de trabajar en uno mismo, por ejemplo Francesca Escoto (entrenadora de negocios) explicó las diferentes etapas de una empresa y nos indicó que escogiéramos en qué etapa estamos cada una, que cada quien se sentara junto a las otras de la misma etapa y trabajáramos en cuál es la siguiente acción a tomar para cada quien. 

Si fuera por mí yo me quedaría todo el día trabajando en eso porque además poder ver desde fuera lo que las demás quieren hacer o están haciendo y ayudarlas es algo que me gusta, tuve una buena conversación con Betty del blog My Friend Betty Says acerca de sus metas. Pero bueno, no tuvimos tanto tiempo de seguir porque la agenda estaba super full! 

Si, esta vez fuimos a la ONU, primero nos reunimos en la fundación Ford con 3 funcionarios: Ana María Currea, del programa de pequeñas becas UNDP-GEF, Chantal Line Carpentier de la Oficina de Desarrollo Sostenible y Aaron Sherinian de la Fundación para las Naciones Unidas.

Fué muy interesante escuchar lo que cada quien tenía que decir acerca de los proyectos que llevan. Lo que más me llamó la atención fué saber que si usan mucho las redes sociales. Cuando estuvimos de visita era casi el día para que empezara el famoso Social Good Summit que se hace cada año en la UN y que decidieron crear una iniciativa para escuchar de a la gente a través de los medios.

Ustedes creen que si tuitean algo, es sólo un tuit y ya? Piensen otra vez, hoy en día hasta la ONU tiene hashtags. Ellos crearon #2030NOW para que CUALQUIER PERSONA comparta lo que quisiera para este mundo en el 2030. Ellos están escuchando y los invito a que participen: Cómo quieren ustedes el mundo en el 2030?

Luego de las charlas nos dieron un tour del edificio de la ONU, visitamos varias de las salas de reuniones, son impresionantes, mi favorita fué la del  Consejo Económico y Social donde parte del techo está sin terminar como símbolo de que siempre hay algo que hacer para mejorar las condiciones de otro lugar en este mundo.

Otra de las cosas que me llamaron la atención fué el estilo y el diseño interior del edificio, tiene un estilo como de los sesenta (mid-century), me encantaron los colores y las texturas en las paredes. También me encantó ver las ventanitas de los intérpretes y el equipo que está instalado en cada silla (ustedes sabían que yo estudié para ser intérprete legal por un tiempo?).

El siguiente paso ya queda en cada quien, yo estoy agradecida de tener estas oportunidades para ayudarme a crecer. Este trabajo a veces se hace solitario y como dije al principio, cuando nosotras blogueras nos juntamos, muchas ideas empiezan a bailar juntas y a encontrar lugares más grandes donde bailar. Yo ahora se de seguro que el proyecto de la guía de regalos de las 3 Amigas fué algo que empezó con una semillita en una conversación en el Top Blogueras del año pasado. Ya estoy emocionada de seguir creciendo este blog y mi negocio. Después del retiro empezó  la conferencia de Latism y mi hermana viajó también. Ya les contaré en otro post.
