Lingua Natal Spanish Summer Camp

Lingua Natal is the third summer camp in San Diego that Adrian has been to, read about the first sunner camp and the second camp too.

I am still amazed at how much spanish Adrian has been speaking after this camp. He did know it but he had such a long time without speaking it, he couldn’t even speak anything anymore. He went for a total of one week but it was an interrupted week because of his surgery. The first day he was very shy and it was hard to leave him crying, he didn’t want to stay. But at the end of the day everything was ok, he had so much fun he asked me if he was coming back the next day (In Spanish of course!).

The cool thing was that even though he had the cast he was still able to participate because this camp focuses more on learning the language through fun activities like crafts, games, reading, cooking, dancing, and more. It doesn’t include sports or playgrounds or water activities which was perfect!

I had a long chat with Lena, the owner and creator of the camp. Her passion is all spread in Lingua Natal which is not only a summer camp, they have year long programs for kids learning Spanish and French. Lingua Natal has an original methodology to teach the language that she created herself and it really works!

They teach kids with a stress-free, full immersion, multi-sensory environment in which language acquisition takes place naturally and in progressive stages.

It’s hard to write here the experience I feel Lingua Natal is. As you know I stayed for a little bit some days to take photos and while I stayed I could tell all the teachers are excellent at what they do, they weren’t there just as a guide for the activities, no. All they said I felt it was coming with a reason but it felt natural. Every time a child speaks in English they repeat what they say in Spanish, with all the patience in world. The kids are constantly doing something hand-on, they are interacting and the classes are small which leads to lots of attention to each child.

During the week that Adrian participated they were learning about all country’s culture and folklore, what do kids in other countries do and so on. They also teach around many other subjects like the ocean and animals for example.

I thought that the subject of world culture was great! Adrian came home telling me about Italy, France, Ireland and Mexico to name a few! They made a french dessert one time (I forgot the name!), they made Fleur de Li bowls (French symbol), they made (sewing!) a Pelele doll which is a custom from Italy (or Spain? Not sure!) and then they played with it, they sang this special song to it:

Lingua Natal es el tercer campamento al que Adrian ha ido este verano. Pueden leer del primer campamento aquí y del segundo aquí.

Yo estoy todavía impresionadísima con la cantidad de español que hablar Adri ahora. La verdad es que el lo sabe pero tenía ya muchísimo tiempo sin hablarlo y ya ni podía decir nada en español. Fué a este campamento por una semana en total pero interrumpida debido a su operación. El primer le costó un poco, tenía mucha pena y no se quería quedar, se me hizo muy dificil a mi dejarlo así llorando pero en la tarde cuando lo fuí a buscar estaba fascinado y contento, se divirtió mucho y ya me estaba preguntando (en español por supuesto!) que si al día siguiente regresaba!

Lo mejor de todo es que a pesar de su yeso todavía pudo participar ya que en este campamento hacen muchas actividades pero no son fuertes como ir al parque o de deportes, hacen muchas manualidades, cocinan, leen, hacen juegos, bailan, entre otros; así que fué perfecto!

Acerca de Lingua Natal

Yo tuve una conversación larga con Lena, la dueña y creadora del campamento. Su pasión por enseñar idiomas se nota muchísimo y es tan admirable en Lingua Natal, que no sólo es un campamento de verano sino un colegio de idiomas (Español y Francés) a lo largo de todo el año. Lingua Natal se basa en un método para la enseñanaza del idioma que es original creado por ella misma y de verdad funciona!

Le enseñan a los niños a través de un ambiente multisensorial, de inmersión completa, sin estrés donde el aprendizaje se lleva a cabo naturalmente y en etapas progresivas.

Es tan dificil escribir aquí la experiencia que es Lingua Natal. Como ustedes saben yo me quedé por un tiempo algunos días para tomar todas las fotos y mientras que estaba allí también tuve tiempo de observar la manera en que las maestras enseñan, ellas no están ahí sólo de guía, no, cada vez que dicen y hacen algo se siente que tiene un porqué y una razón especiífica, nosé como explicarlo pero es muy agradable. Cada vez que los niños dicen algo en inglés por ejemplo, ellas lo repiten en español con mucha paciencia. Los niños están haciendo algo constantmente, están intractuando y las clases son pequeñas lo que da más atención a cada uno de ellos.

Durante la semana en que Adrian participó aprendieron el español a través de muchas actividades que tienen que ver con la cultura y el folklore de todos los paises del mundo, de lo que hacen los niños en lotros paises, de sus juegos de su comida. En otras ocaciones también enseñan con el tema de animales o del oceano por ejemplo.

A mi me encantó el tema de las culturas del mundo, me pareció muy chévere! Adrian llegaba en la tarde contándome de francia, Italia, Mexico, Irrrrlanda (como lo dice él) por nombrar algunos! Hicieron un dulce francés que probé (ahora no me acuerdo como se llama), hicieron unos platos de fleur de lis (flor de liz, el símbolo de Francia), cocieron (esto me dejó super impresionada!) unos muñecos que se llaman Pelele que es una costumbre de Italia (O España? No estoy segura!) y luego jugaron con ellos y le cantaron una canción especial:
